Khumariyaan in Concert

  • 1925 South Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60616 (map)

A captivating concert by Khumariyaan, a renowned dynamic instrumental Pashtun band from Pakistan that is celebrated for fusing traditional folk music with modern acoustic energy. The band's name, translating to "the state of intoxication from music",  captures the essence of their music that has reawakened the live music scene in Peshawar, a city at the ancient crossroads through the Khyber Pass that links Pakistan and Afghanistan. The band's mission is to use native music as a medium of peace, to enlighten and inspire the youth of Pakistan.

The lute-like Pashto rubab is the meeting point for this transfixing, hyper-folk quintet that intertwines the djembe-like zerbaghali (clay or wooden goblet drum), sehtar (long-necked lute), and searching vocals underpinned with driving, acoustic guitars.  Band members include: Farhan Bogra – rabab and sehtar; Sparlay Rawail – lead guitar and dhol; Aamer Shafiq – rhythm guitar; Shiraz Khan – percussion; Obaid Khan - vocals.

The group shares a vision of experiencing the trance of live, acoustic music, believing it is the highest form of art, they leave its interpretation to the audience while providing a captivating philosophical experience.

*Center Stage, a U.S. State Department Program is a presenting partner for this performance.
