Masala Memories: Celebrating South Asian Food In Chicago

  • 1925 South Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60616 (map)

This unique program will feature a panel discussion by leading local journalists and chefs on the evolution of Chicago’s South Asian food scene followed by a tasting of South Asian street foods.

With its large and diverse Asian American population, Chicago has one of the nation’s most vibrant South Asian food scenes. Its past and continuing evolution will be discussed by a panel consisting of journalists Steve Dolinsky and Mike Sula and chefs Jeet Singh of Basant and Falguni Dewjee of Bombay Eats. They’ll debate why South Asian food isn’t as popular as other ethnic cuisines, why most customers limit their choices to a few dishes, and how restaurants can get their guests to expand their choices . Chaired by food historian and author Colleen Taylor Sen, the panel will end with a Q & A session.

Afterwards attendees will sample a wide selection of vegetarian and nonvegetarian street food representing different regions of the South Asia. Chai and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided and Azadi Brewing representing Chicago, will be served for those 21+ attendees.

The program is co-sponsored by Patel Brothers, Basant Modern Indian Restaurant and Bombay Eats.
